Skateboard Grip Tape Application

Gripping a Skateboard Deck

To properly apply grip tape to your deck you will need the following items:

    * (1) metal file
    * (1) safety knife with a fresh razorblade
    * (1) sheet of grip tape
    * (1) skateboard deck

Step 1: Begin by removing the paper backing off the sheet of grip tape (set aside - you'll need this in a minute)

Step 2: Suspended the grip tape in a U-shape over the top of the deck with the rough surface facing up

Step 3: Now, match and apply the middle of the grip tape sheet to the middle of the skate deck

Step 4: Gradually lower and position the first 1/2 section of the grip to the top of the deck and follow with the remaining 1/2 section, making sure to cover the entire deck from nose to tail

Step 5: Once you are satisfied with the position of the grip tape, starting with the nose or tail using your open hand, and press down firmly on the grip so that the adhesive sticks to the skateboard deck's surface

Step 6: Once you have pressed the grip down on the entire deck, place the paper backing on top of the grip with the shiny side up (remember I said to set it aside?) and rub the surface of the paper with the outer part of your hand

Step 7: If there are any remaining air bubbles, just use the tip of a razor to pop them (EASY, don't slice it!)

Step 8: Now that the tape is positioned properly and there are no air pockets, it is time to remove the excess (Recommended position: place the skateboard lengthwise and flat on a stable work table with the skateboard's outer edge hanging over the table's outer edge)

Step 9: Now using the metal file, apply pressure to the rail of the deck and grip tape

Step 10: Slide back and forth (3 - 4 strokes per area) to create a white outline on the grip. This does two very useful things (1) gives you a guideline for cutting and (2) wears down the grip making it easier to cut

Step 11: Firmly hold the nose or tail of the deck with one hand while press your forearm to the top of the deck to secure its position

Step 12: Take the safety knife and hold it at a 45° angle. Place the knife under the grip and poke it through (CAUTION: Children should be monitored and supervised by an adult)

Step 13: Now, start cutting the grip allowing the outline and skateboard rail to guide you as you go. If you are holding the knife at the proper angle, this should be an easy process. (CAUTION: Do not to cut too deep as it will cut into the board)

Step 14: Remove the excess grip tape, look over the entire board, and clean up whatever you feel is unnecessary
